Zimmer Magazine's stance on generative artificial intelligence

Zimmer Magazine champions writing that can only come from authentic lived experience and human complexity. As the use of artificial intelligence becomes increasingly more advanced, its use and adoption is becoming ever more widespread within the industry. However, here at Zimmer Magazine, we view human authorship as central to our mission and the very definition of literature. Human creativity is the reason our magazine exists. We believe in the importance of a clear stance on the use of artificial intelligence as it continues to be used more and more in the magazine industry, so we welcome writers and readers to read the following information:

Our articles have always been, and always will be, written by humans. Every piece we publish is shaped by personal insight, risk and reflection – qualities that algorithms cannot possess. We believe writing matters when it reveals vulnerability, questions assumptions and brings an individual’s perspective to the page. We invite writers to bring their contradictions, doubts and discoveries, knowing that these are the elements that give writing power and resonance.

Our editors do not use generative artificial intelligence to edit pieces, generate headlines or compose website excerpts. We believe in the intelligence of our own team to create unique, thought-provoking and authentically human content which a machine cannot recreate.

AI in submissions When submitting poetry, articles or any other written content, you may be asked to confirm whether AI tools were used in brainstorming, drafting or editing your work. We require this disclosure to maintain transparency in our editorial process.

AI in job applications – We understand that you may rely on AI-generated content to maintain professionalism in your application, however, when choosing between candidates, we focus on looking for the person and behind the application. The way you format your CV, LinkedIn profile, or your application via email are always which we can see who you are. Applications that are found to be fully AI-generated will not be considered, invited for interview, or invited to apply again.

However, we do understand and agree that artificial intelligence can be helpful when used for certain things. The list below includes the limited ways in which we use artificial intelligence at Zimmer.

  • Translation – our writers come from countries around the world and can use AI-based translators to help them articulate and express their thoughts correctly.

  • SEO- or alt-text for images, which is for the website only, and is not visible to readers.

  • Transcribing meetings and interviews

  • Researching – writers may find it useful to use AI as a search engine, looking for specific examples, suggested articles, or dates in order to enhance their work. However, the words themselves must always be the writer’s own.

We are open to contributions and opinions on our stance on AI, which you can reach by emailing heidi@zimmermagazine.com
