Volunteer Culture Editor

We’re excited to be opening up our Culture section — and we’re looking for a passionate Culture Editor to help shape its voice and direction from the very beginning.

This role would suit someone who has studied — or is currently studying — English, Cultural Studies, Media, Journalism, Sociology, or a related field. The ideal candidate is curious, collaborative, thoughtful, and passionate about how culture influences the way we live, think, create, and connect. Our magazine is dedicated to thinking differently and highlighting perspectives that aren’t heard often enough — so it’s essential that you bring a strong and compassionate editorial voice. You’re welcome to explore our website to learn more about what we do and why we do it.

As Culture Editor, you will help shape articles that explore themes such as gender equality, identity, body politics, representation, feminism in everyday life, social movements, class, economy and labour, and the intersections between culture and power. Writers may pitch their own ideas or work on assigned topics, and you’ll collaborate with them to refine arguments, strengthen structure, and ensure each piece is engaging, respectful, and thought-provoking. We value flexibility — your workload is based on what you can realistically commit to.

The ideal person will have:

  • Strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Confidence giving constructive feedback and guiding writers
  • Interest in cultural commentary and critical thinking
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • An enthusiasm for conversation, ideas, and storytelling

This is a remote volunteer role and can be carried out from anywhere in the world. You do not need previous editorial experience — passion, willingness to learn, and initiative are just as important.

To apply:

  • email heidi@zimmermagazine.com with your CV and a short introduction about yourself
  • if available, attach examples of writing or editing work so we can get a sense of your approach and voice
  • cover letters are welcome, but not required

Successful applicants will be contacted via email and invited to an informal interview.
